A LOVE OF COOKING, A WINNING TASTE

The story of Es Teler 77 began with the late Murniati Widjaja’s love of cooking. A homemaker who enjoyed creating her own recipes, she developed an es teler featuring her signature homemade syrup. In 1981, the recipe was crowned “Indonesia’s Champion”, marking the beginning of a taste that would later become known and loved by many.

A HUMBLE BEGINNING, A LASTING FOUNDATION

In 1982, Es Teler 77 began at a modest stall in Central Jakarta, as a family business built on hard work and dedication.

Murniati Widjaja and her daughter, Yenny Setia Widjaja, personally prepared the es teler and food served each day. Yenny’s husband, Sukyatno Nugroho, helped drive the business in many ways, from selecting fresh fruit every morning to introducing Es Teler 77 to more customers through pioneering marketing initiatives.

The early years brought many challenges and, at times, meant having to start again. But each challenge strengthened their determination to find new ways forward and continue growing.

This was where the foundations of Es Teler 77 were laid.

GROWING WITH INDONESIA

From that humble beginning came a bold idea ahead of its time: building a quick-service franchise for local Indonesian food, when franchising was still relatively new in Indonesia. This step helped Es Teler 77 grow from one outlet into a local culinary brand present in cities across the country and becoming one of Indonesia’s pioneering food and beverage franchises.

A LEGACY OF SHARED JOY

For Sukyatno Nugroho, Es Teler 77 was not only about building a business, but also about bringing happiness and creating opportunities for others. Inspired by “Di Sini Senang, Di Sana Senang,” a joyful Indonesian children’s song, the phrase became a guiding principle in how he lived, led, and grew the business.

This principle came to life through various community initiatives, from organising a Gado-Gado Competition for underprivileged communities to inviting visually impaired guests to outlet openings, where they could enjoy the food and share their talents through performances. His life and values were later captured in the biography Prinsip Di Sini Senang, Di Sana Senang, a legacy that continues to live on in the spirit of Es Teler 77.

STAYING TRUE TO TASTE, GROWING FORWARD

Today, more than four decades later, Es Teler 77 has grown into an Indonesian culinary brand familiar to many. More than just a place to eat, Es Teler 77 has become part of everyday moments, with the taste of Indonesia enjoyed across generations.

That same spirit and love for cooking continue with Yenny Setia Widjaja, warmly known as Oma Teler. Through food and drink innovation, she continues to carry forward the legacy of Es Teler 77 while keeping it close to customers.

As times change, Es Teler 77 continues to innovate for today’s generation and generations to come, while bringing the taste of Indonesia further into international markets.
